WoW Update - 28 Feb 2008

Quick runs with Supsop's group last night.

1. Zul'Aman (Avierra) - First 2 bosses only, looted 3 Badges of Justice (total 56).
2. Karazhan (Avierra) - Maiden and Opera event only. Shard of the Virtuous dropped, but lost the roll. Looted 4 Badges of Justice (total 60). Slowly making progress. ZA reset last night, which means I'm available for ZA runs again.

Gearing Forward

Moving forward, here's the breakdown of what I need to do (assuming I stay a healadin)...

Engineering item - farm mats, raise Engineering to 375
Karazhan drops - 1 from Prince, 1 from the Opera event, 1 from Chess event
Zul'Aman drops - 1 from High Lord Malacrass, 1 from Halazzi, 1 from Zul'jin
Badge of Justice rewards - 4 from 2.4 badge loot (335 Badges total), 1 from current badge loot (60 badges total)

That's almost 400 badges needed! I'm barely an eighth into that amount.

Gotta get a move on...

The Care and Feeding of Healadins

Anyone coming into this blog for the first time is going to think that I hate healing, when in fact the opposite is true; I love being a Holy Paladin. I have been healing in raids since ASTIG first started running Zul'Gurub and Molten Core; I have healed in 5-man instances and battlegrounds and every raid instance ASTIG has attempted. If I sound unhappy or, worse yet, ungrateful, please excuse me because that was not my intention.

Healing as a Holy Paladin is a joy. I don't have as much +heal as a priest, nor do I want it, especially if it will reduce my +spellcrit. My highest-ranked Holy Light averages 6500 on a critical heal, which happens once every three or four heals. Trust me when I say this is just above average and that there are plenty of other paladins who heal for more on a crit.

Paladin heals are remarkably focused. We usually only have two kinds of heals - Flash of Light, which we cast in 1.5 seconds, and Holy Light, which takes all of 2.5 seconds to cast - an eternity that is blessedly cut short by the Light's Grace talent, which all healing pallies should have. We don't have instant heals - except for Holy Shock, which is really more of a panic button than anything else. We don't have heals over time. We simply have to choose between a short casting time and a long one.

So when it comes to raid healing, you'll find a paladin healer on the main tank and no one else. We'll leave topping up the raid to the shamans and the druids. Putting a paladin in the same group as a shadow priest or an OOMkin druid is the best way to keep your paladin healer happy - critical heals return mana, but only 60% of the base cost of the spell, which means we guzzle down a lot of potions to remain viable throughout the fight.

I suppose the best way to give back to the community is to write a bit more about that, so expect more posts on being a healadin.

WoW Update - 25 Feb 2008

I logged in at around 9:30 am to find a Kara group looking for a healer to replace one of theirs. Since I was in dire need of badges, I asked to join them - fortunately, the instance resets in about a day and a half, so I won't be losing out on any raid time.

It was a very good run for Avierra - we had excellent tanks and fantastic DPS. Three healers kept things going: a resto druid and two holy pallies, helped out quite a bit by a shadow priest. We downed Moroes to Illhoof, garnering Avierra 10 badges total - 54 badges, woot! Avi also traded out her Lower City Prayerbook for a Ribbon of Sacrifice, which was pretty great.

As I won't be on again today, this was a pretty good day for WoW.

WoW Update - 24 Feb 2008

I got home from Corinna's birthday celebration in Tagaytay to find that my 9 pm Karazhan raid had occurred earlier in the afternoon. Which was fine by me since I needed to spend some time leveling Engineering anyway, if a little bit annoying. On the other hand, it's partly my own fault since I didn't text back and commit to the raid. So no blame is being tossed around here, at least not by me.

So Anyssa threw me an invite to Zul'Aman, which I somewhat reluctantly accepted. I don't like going to new instances without reading boss strats and watching YouTube videos of how to take down the bosses. I think it's fair to assume that most of ASTIG's raiders don't feel the same way, but I always want to maximize my time in an instance by being as ready as possible. I was also somewhat hesitant to accept the invite because of the high drama potential - I mean, I have been gone quite some time.

I was quite glad to find that the raiding experience is back to normal, that is, back to the old pre-TBC atmosphere with people mostly prepared and focused on the raid. We had a few wipes thanks to carelessness, but that's nothing new - in the end, we downed two bosses (couldn't make the timer, though). I looted three Badges of Justice tonight, and they were well earned.

It helps that Zul'Aman is very much like Zul'Gurub, and I have nothing but fond memories of ZG. ZG was my first real raid instance (well, except for UBRS), before Molten Core and the travesty that was Blackwing Lair. We spent so much time in there that in the end Avierra hit Revered with the Zandalar Tribe. The Zandalar Freethinker's Breastplate is still one of my favorite pieces of Paladin equipment, even though I rarely take it out of my bank these days.

So now I have a somewhat standing invitation to join the ZA group on their runs. It's something I'm thinking about. Certainly I have to keep in mind my other commitments, and there is that respec looming on the horizon. And damned if ASTIG doesn't need pally healers all over again - something I'm gonna need to talk to someone about soon.

Anyway, before I left, I brought Avierra up to 230 Engineering and bid 850 gold on a Band of Impenetrable Defenses. If I win it, well, gratz to me. If I don't, at least I hung on to 850 gold. We'll find out in a couple of days.

WoW Update - 23 Feb 2008

Bleeding Hollow came back up pretty quickly and I was able to spend most of my afternoon online.

Basically I ran Heroic Mana Tombs again for the daily heroic and farmed 3 Badges (no summoned fourth boss). With quest turnin that makes 5 Badges.

The group I was with (Marte, the main tank of SeeD, and Akatosh, an enhancement shaman from FUBAR) were pretty happy with my healing, so from there we went on to try Heroic Durnholde Keep.

Which was something of a mistake. Two hours into the instance we got stuck. Thrall kept running faster than our mana regeneration could allow. Even with good CC we just couldn't make the group work. We did, however, bring down the first boss, which brought my Badge total of the day to 6. Avierra ended the day with 40 Badges of Justice.

I also spent a lot of time bringing Avi's Engineering up - yes, I finally dropped BS. By logoff I was at Engineering 200, having fledged Goblin Engineering (on Dabs's advice, for Goblin Rocket Launcher at the very least. With the Launcher in one of my trinket slots I can easily pass the 11k HP mark!

No WoW today as I'll be driving to Tagaytay, so it looks like I'll be online late tonight or all day tomorrow. Or both, actually.

Bleeding Hollow's Down

Bleeding Hollow was taken down for maintenance today, and it sucks. Today is Saturday and I fully expected it to be a WoW-heavy day; instead I'm just blogging about how I wish I could be playing WoW.

So I find myself looking at how I'm going to become a tankadin.

Don't get me wrong; I love healing. There's something glorious about seeing a Holy Light critically heal, filling up your tank's hit points and restoring your mana. And there's no shortage of healer slots that need filling, whether it's in a 5-man instance or in a 40-man BG.

But tanking instances... that gets me excited.

So I popped into Sandbox to figure out where I stood with my hit points and DEF scores. If I respecced to Prot today, I would have around 9.6k HP now - close to my minimum target of 11k HP, but not quite there. And I'm at 478 DEF. Just 12 points to go.

Avi's sitting on 34 Badges of Justice now - and I'll need 15 for a Libram of Repentance. Other than that, I'd best save up for the patch 2.4 gear - I'm specifically looking at saving up 100 Badges for a Shattrath Protectorate's Breastplate. I realize I've got a long way to go, though.

I think I should also drop my Blacksmithing for Engineering right now - the Tankatronic Goggles are better than T4 gear. I was going to craft a Felsteel Helm for Avi but looking at it now, it seems a stupid idea.

What's going to be difficult is filling up my trinket slots. I can't get into a Kara group on a regular basis, so I'm not sure I can get a hold of Moroes' Lucky Pocket Watch. I'll probably have to farm Shadow Labyrinth for Adamantine Figurine and Shattered Halls for a Figurine of the Colossus.

Rings are also something of a problem. I'm considering Ashyen's Gift for its high +STA and the +spellhit (the +spelldamage isn't bad either) and I'll probably scour the AH for a Band of Impenetrable Defenses.

Bah, that's enough dreaming. BH should be up by now...

WoW Update - 21 Feb 2008

I stayed home yesterday, which was nice for a change... instead of staying in front of the computer in the office, I stayed in front of the computer at home. Haha.

In between readings I ran instances and farmed badges for Avierra.

Here's the take:
1. Slave Pens (heroic) - Hungarfen only. Farmed 1 Badge of Justice.
2. Mechanar (heroic) - All bosses downed. Farmed 4 Badges of Justice and Vindicator's Legplates.
3. Mana Tombs (heroic) - All bosses downed, including summoned boss. Farmed 4 Badges of Justice and Gauntlets of Vindication. (I was hoping for The Fel Barrier but it didn't drop.) Heroic Mana Tombs happened to be the daily heroic so I got an extra 2 Badges.
4. Botanica - Not a heroic run, but I ran it with a very OP group, so it took an hour and fifteen minutes to complete. Completing Botanica allowed me to get my Sha'tari Vindicator's Waistguard and my Arcatraz key.

11 Badges, an epic and a rare item. Yesterday was a good day for WoW.

Behind the Scenes

A little WoW tonight with nothing to show for it - Qai didn't ding and Avierra didn't get to loot anything. As much as I enjoy playing the game, it's game sessions like last night's that truly frustrate me. Avi was in a Heroic SP group that just kept messing up (admittedly, I was at fault for part of it). In the end everyone just gave up four mobs before the first boss.

A few site changes coming and already done - I've implemented Wowhead integration. There's some custom code I'll be installing soon (aka someday) for Armory integration. And I'm hoping to put in a nicer layout, too.

WoW Update - 19 Feb 2008

A little playtime for Qai last night - no ding, but that's okay. I didn't feel like leveling; I was too concerned over where my BH characters were going.

So I logged out of Dragonblight and into Bleeding Hollow. With a little time to spare, I sat in Shattrah and waited in LFG for a group needing a healer.

Here's also what's bothering me about being on both DB and BH - on BH there's a scarcity of good tanks and a lot of healers looking for groups. And that's where my holy paladin is - another reason why I'd like to respec Avierra into prot.

On Dragonblight it seems that there might be more tanks available.

A messed-up Heroic UB run later (Hungarfen down, 1 Badge of Justice looted), I'm a bit clearer now on what I want for Avierra so she can respec to protection.

The objective: to respec Avierra into protection without a significant loss in capability to run heroics and/or Karazhan.

Here's what I'm looking at, pre-respec:
  1. Run Botanica to complete How To Break Into the Alcatraz, which will give me Sha'tari Vindicator's Waistguard. It's a better tanking belt than my Borak's Belt of Bravery.
  2. Purchase the necessary gems - Solid Stars of Elune for blue slots, Flashing Living Rubies for red slots, Thick Dawnstones for yellow slots. (More details later for how many I'll need.)
  3. Acquire through purchase or DE'ing the necessary materials for the following enchants - +100 Health to chest, +12 STA to bracers, +12 STA to boots, +18 STA to shield.
  4. Acquire the following enchants/enhancements - Clefthide Leg Armor, Greater Inscription of Warding, Glyph of the Defender.
  5. Craft the following - Felsteel Helm, Felsteel Gloves
  6. Purchase Continuum Blade and Libram of Repentance.
Post-respec:

  1. Exalt with the Sha'tar to have access to Crest of the Sha'tar. This can also be done pre-respec as well.
  2. Drop Blacksmithing and train Engineering to be able to craft Tankatronic Goggles.
If I'm able to follow up on these before 2.4 I'll be in a good position to take advantage of the new content.

A Fresh Start... Not Really

Well, I'm back.

It's been more than four months since my last post, and of course a lot has happened since then.

I didn't get to blog about some of the things that were on my mind then - at the time, I felt I was stagnating in BH. I wasn't enjoying raiding any more, and in some cases the only thing that was keeping me in the raid was the fact that I had looted more than anyone else (hey, it wasn't my fault that healing plate gear kept dropping).

So in mid-October I took a break from WoW to look around and maybe fall in love with another game. I tried going back to LOTRO but got tremendously bored. Then my PC died and I didn't bother replacing it for a month and a half...

Anyway.

I set up a new char (Harme, a NE Druid) on Exodar as a "favor" to someone, but stopped at around level 18.

Then my buddies John and Pepper asked if we could set up together on another server. I chose Dragonblight this time - even though I already had a Retri Pally on the server (Aedra, stuck at 48) and RL friends playing, I decided to start fresh and roll a new paladin. Qai, my Draenei Prot Pally, is now at level 33. Even though Pepper and John are no longer playing on DB, I'm still leveling Qai in the hopes of running raid content in the near future.

Which leads me to once again question what I'm doing with my toons.

Right now my "main", Avierra, is a level 70 Holy Paladin on BH. By far she's the most developed of my toons. She's run Karazhan and made a few Gruul's attempts. She's about 50% epicced and could probably raid heal the entirety of Kara, but not much else. I've tried PVPing with her and the results aren't bad; on the other hand, I'm not that enthusiastic about getting much more in the way of PVP gear.

At the moment, she's a Swordsmith Blacksmith with 372 BS. She also has a few epic recipes - from memory, she can craft Dirge, Eternium Runed Blade and Hand of Eternity. At the moment she has 1 Primal Nether and 22 Badges of Justice - 8 Badges shy of crafting Hand of Eternity, which would be a significant upgrade to her Hammer of the Penitent. I'm considering doing just that, as I've no prospects for Kara runs in the near future. After I finish crafting the Hand, I may just drop BS to pick up Engineering for the Justicebringer 2000 Specs.

Froufrou, my 70 Gnome Rogue, is still in limbo. I took her out of mothballs for a few AV runs this weekend, but since the release of that damned Horde-only addon for AV (Stinkyqueue), Alliance has been consistently losing in AV. She's sitting on around 7000 Honor points that I intend to use to buy Gladiator's Shiv - but I'm not holding my breath for that. At 7000+ HP she's not really ideal for PVP, but the weapons are really really tempting.

I've got Altitis at the moment and I'm not terribly happy about it.

So far here's what I've been doing: I play Qai for a bit, ding her once, then leave DB to log into BH. Then I play with Froufrou - usually AV, occasionally EOTS or AB - while monitoring LFG for a healer opening.

This is not an ideal setup. My gold reserves are dwindling since I'm not farming. I don't have a clear plan for what I want to do with my toons. I'm a little exasperated with ASTIG in BH for all the drama, but I'm a bit cowed by what might happen in DB. I'm not really so sure I'll even have a raid slot, nor am I sure I'll be available to raid with my RL friends.

In the meantime, I'm just leveling my pally in the hopes of better times ahead.

Welcome back to Azeroth indeed.
